Lucknowi Chikan- A History of Magic On Fabrics
Introduced by her Majesty Noor Jahan, the queen of Mughal emperor Jahangir, the Lucknowi Chikan Embroidery has flourished since then, and gave rise rise to an endemic textile industry that is unique in itself and has been renowned among the international fashion diaspora. Chikan is traditionally a White-On-White embroidery which is done on fabrics like muslin, silk and chiffon that are usually soft and sheer, to allow the embroidery needles to pierce them easily. It starts with designing patterns to be embroidered which are then block printed on the fabric by means of washable temporary ink, that is reworked by the expert hands of artisans to bring forth unique designs. The dress is then washed to remove the ink residues and finished.
